Dental Implants Process

The Process To A Natural and Comfortable New Smile

Lost or damaged teeth can hugely affect our lives; they limit what we can eat, change the way we look and often significantly knock our self-esteem. Dental implants are tiny titanium posts, which provide the perfect foundation for replacement teeth. Positioning the dental implant into the jaw bone is done surgically and a replacement dental crowns are placed over the top of the titanium post.

The dental implant looks, feels, and functions just like regular teeth. What that means is that you can smile with confidence again, knowing that your teeth look natural and your facial expressions are just as they should be. With dental implants, you can reclaim the comfort and confidence of eating, speaking and laughing just like you used to.

How Dental Implants Work

Teeth implants are a well-established treatment and a common way of replacing missing teeth. The tooth implant is placed directly into the jawbone of the missing tooth, creating an artificial root. The tooth implant has an internal screw, known as an abutment, that holds a dental crown in place. The implant is fitted, and the jaw bone gradually grows and fuses with the titanium. Eventually, it firmly holds the tooth implant in place which creates a foundation for the artificial teeth.

Dental implants can support one or several replacement teeth. The number of teeth implants required varies according to the total number of replacement teeth. As well as supporting the dental crown, the dental implant can also help preserve facial structure. The integration of the titanium implants into the jaw structure prevents further deterioration of the bone which can occur when teeth are missing.

Why Teeth Implants?

The principal reason people consider dental implants is because they have teeth that are missing. Implants are the most natural choice for replacing teeth and offer some key benefits:

  • Stop your teeth shifting: When you have a missing tooth, your other teeth will gradually move to fill the gap. This causes further problems with unevenly spaced or crowded teeth. Making teeth challenging to clean.
  • Conserve your jawbone: When a tooth is missing the jawbone deteriorates due to lack of stimulation. Having a dental implant causes the bone to fuse to the titanium and thus, supports the jawbone.
  • Support dentures comfortable: Dentures can fit poorly, prevent you from eating your favourite foods, and create sores in your mouth. Dental implants permanently fix and support dentures to alleviate these problems.
  • Preserve your facial contours: If your jawbone begins to deteriorate due to missing teeth, your face can appear sunken. Having a dental implant will promote the production of a healthy jawbone and keep your face looking full and youthful.

First Step: Book a Free Implant Consultation?

In theory, dental implants are suitable for anyone with missing teeth. However, it does depend on the condition of your jawbone. You can book a free implant consultation with Dr. Mallik, where he will ascertain how much jawbone is present. If there isn’t enough jawbone or your bone isn’t healthy enough to support the tooth implant, a bone graft may be needed.

Dental implants are suitable for most adults with good general health but aren’t suitable for people under the age of 18. The underlying bone is still growing, and the procedure must wait until it has fully developed.

Special considerations have to be considered if you smoke, have had radiotherapy to your jaw area, have diabetes or have gum disease. These conditions don’t mean dental implants are impossible. However, your dentist will review your medical history first to ensure they will be the most suitable option.

The Dental Implant Treatment Process

The first step towards getting dental implants is to have a radiographic examination with us at Acacia Dental. You will meet with Dr. Mallik, who is an expert in the field of dental implant dentistry. The consultation allows us to review your mouth and address any questions you have about the treatment. It is your chance to ask any questions. Our team will work closely with you to alleviate any concerns.

After the consultation phase, the process for fitting dental implants includes two main stages:

1. Fitting your teeth implant

To fit your teeth implants, you will come into our dental practice in Woden, in Canberra. Here you go under local anaesthesia. It will block any pain, although you will remain awake during the procedure. The operation takes between 30 minutes and several hours, depending on the number of teeth implants needed.

At this stage, the implant will be beneath the surface while it gradually bonds with your jawbone over the following three to six months. During this time you will be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet.

2. Attaching replacement teeth

You will need to come to the surgery for another procedure in which your dentist will uncover the implants and attach an abutment. An Abutment is a piece that allows your replacement teeth to be firmly attached.

3. The Crown is fixed

The final stage in the treatment involves attaching a dental crown to the abutment. Once the crown is in place the replacement tooth looks as good as new and feels and functions just like a natural tooth.

The longevity of your dental implants will depend upon how well you look after them. However, a good standard of oral hygiene with regular dental appointments will increase your chances of long-lasting dental implants.

Paying For Your Dental Implant Treatment

The price of dental implants will vary depending on your overall treatment plan. We will talk you through this during your initial examination. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that delaying the decision to get implants can cause your jawbone to deteriorate further. To help make the treatment more accessible, we have several payment plans to help you with the costs:
